We're working actors too. With everything happening in AI right now, we think it's more important than ever to stay vigilant. So here are the questions we'd want answered, if we were you.
AI can do incredible things, like speeding up cancer research. It can also be used to profit off artists without their consent, and too much of the tech industry has let that happen. We don't stand for the latter.
Your scripts, voice, and self tapes are never used to train any AI. And before we build anything, it has to pass three tests:
If it's not a hell yes on all three, we don't build it.
Never. Your scripts and takes are saved on your phone. A few things leave it, only when a feature needs them: an imported script's text, so it can be split into lines; your scene partners' lines, so an AI voice can read them, plus your recording of a line if you ask an AI voice to perform it your way; and scenes you share, which are encrypted on your phone first. They're yours. You decide what to keep, what to delete, and what to send to casting. When you read with a scene partner, the call is end-to-end encrypted. We built it this way from day one, because your work is yours.
In two places: AI voices, so your scene partner sounds smooth and natural in rehearsal and on your self tapes, and splitting an imported script into characters and lines. Everything else is good old-fashioned code. Your scenes, recordings, and takes are stored locally on your device.
Yes. Your scene is stored on your phone, like printed sides in your bag. When you import a PDF, its text passes through our server to be split into lines and isn't kept; when you share a scene with a reader, it's encrypted on your phone before it reaches us: we deliver it, but we can't read it. If you use an AI voice, the line's text goes to our voice provider to be spoken; the audio is saved on your phone, we delete the provider's copy within about a week, and it's never used to train AI. And when you read with a real actor, the call is end-to-end encrypted.
Us too! Penelope will never replace a real reader. If you have friends who'll read for you on demand, you've been blessed in this lifetime, and please teach us your secret. For the rest of us, we're building a community of actors who read for each other, coming soon, so you can find a real reader right in the app. AI voices are there for when you can't find someone in time, or need to get off book fast.
Our founding team is a group of friends who are working actors, filmmakers, engineers, visual artists, and comics who code. We've been best friends for as long as we can remember. We named ourselves after Penelope in The Odyssey, who weaves by day and unweaves by night to stay in control of her own story. She's strong and loyal, and that's what we want to be for you.
Yes. Listen to previews, filter by gender or accent, and choose the AI voices that fit your scene.
In a world where you can choose to be anything, we choose to be good.
With love,
The Penelope Team · info@penelopeacting.com
